Bifera - Merch & Campaign

Brand & Identity

When Meda Consumer Healthcare needed to convince a skeptical audience that a new iron supplement wouldn’t upset their stomach the way traditional iron did, the campaign leaned into a wink instead of a clinical claim — anchored by a single retro stock photo turned into a full illustrated identity system built to work everywhere from web banners to trade show booths.

The Challenge

What Was the Problem?

When I joined Meda Consumer Healthcare, Bifera was one of the company’s major new product launches — an iron supplement built on two different forms of iron (hence the name: Bi + Fe) derived from hemoglobin into a more digestible form than the market leader, Feosol. The clinical story was strong, but iron supplements as a category carry a reputation problem: most people who’ve taken one remember the stomach upset, not the benefit.

The campaign needed to signal “this one’s different” instantly, without leaning on clinical language nobody reads on a shelf. And whatever we built had to survive being reproduced across an unusually wide range of formats — web, print, trade show signage, apparel — starting from a single full-color stock photograph, which by itself could only go so far.

The Work

How I Solved It

We built the campaign around a knowingly retro image — a 1950s-style “housewife” holding up a clothes iron — paired with the tagline “This ain’t your mamma’s iron,” playing on the double meaning of iron-the-appliance and iron-the-supplement to make the differentiation memorable instead of clinical.

The single full-color stock photo wasn’t enough on its own to carry a campaign across that many formats, so I built a full illustrated version of the character — a solid treatment for light backgrounds and a reversed, knockout treatment for dark ones — so she could scale cleanly across web banners, print collateral, trade show booth graphics, signage, and apparel without ever looking like a stretched photo or a mismatched crop.

The illustrated system became the face of Bifera across every channel the brand touched — banners, booths, signage, and branded merchandise like the shirts shown here — for the full run of the campaign. It stayed in market until Meda Consumer Healthcare acquired Feosol itself and retired Bifera into the newly rebranded Feosol Complete, at which point the character retired along with it.
